Cultural Tourism
Tourism is New Jersey's 2nd largest industry, which generates about $36 billion per year, employs nearly 500,000 people and generates $15.2 billion in wages. The fastest growing element of the travel industry is Cultural Tourism.

We define the word "cultural" very broadly to include involvement with the arts, history, and humanities as well as entertainment, certain aspects of recreation and more. New Jersey's cultural treasures, which include hundreds of museums, theatres, dance companies, symphonies, operas, musical festivals and more, attract an ever increasing number of tourists each year. And we define "cultural tourists" as people who come to visit New Jersey for culture activities as a primary or secondary purpose. Studies show that the cultural tourist stays longer, spends more and returns more frequently than the average tourist. They also tell us that people increasingly travel with a personally crafted itinerary that seeks out the unique attributes of a location and an authentic experience.

This is why our Council actively promotes cultural tourism and brings the fabulous array of NJ arts programs to the notice of more people and helps build audiences and revenues for them. And in doing so also supports the entire economy of the state meaning jobs, businesses and tax revenues, as well as bolster the national and international image of our state.

In this room we will provide information that can be helpful to arts groups and others that wish to explore the potential of Cultural Tourism to improve your work and your communities. For a full array of web sites of interest to Cultural Tourism, visit the Resource Room.
